What Household Tasks Will My Newborn Care Professional Do?

One of the most common questions we hear during consultations is, “Will you help around the house?” It’s a great question. When you’re bringing home a new baby, the dishes and laundry don’t stop, and knowing exactly what kind of help to expect makes it easier to plan.

The short answer: your newborn care professional is there to care for your baby and support your recovery. That includes a lot of baby-related household tasks, and some light help that keeps your home running smoothly. It doesn’t include full housekeeping. Here’s a closer look.

First, Know Who’s Coming

At Kansas City Newborn Care, families work with two main types of professionals, and their focus is a little different.

Newborn care specialists focus on the baby. They’re often booked overnight so parents can sleep, and their household tasks center on the baby’s needs and space.

Postpartum doulas care for the whole family. They support the baby, the recovering parent, and the household during the day, so their help often reaches a little further into the home.

What’s Typically Included

Baby-related tasks (both roles)

  • Washing, drying, and folding the baby’s laundry, including burp cloths, swaddles, and crib sheets
  • Washing and sterilizing bottles, nipples, and pump parts
  • Preparing bottles and formula, or organizing pumped milk in the fridge or freezer
  • Restocking the diaper station and nursery supplies
  • Tidying the nursery and any baby areas used during the shift
  • Keeping a log of feedings, diapers, and sleep

Family and recovery support (postpartum doulas)

  • Light meal prep or making simple snacks for the recovering parent
  • Keeping water and snacks within reach during feeds
  • Light tidying of the kitchen and areas used during the shift
  • Running the dishwasher or washing dishes used during care
  • Helping the parent get settled for a shower, nap, or rest
  • Folding a load of family laundry when time allows

What’s Not Included

Your newborn care professional is a skilled specialist, not a housekeeper or a nanny for older children. These tasks generally fall outside their role:

  • Deep cleaning, mopping, vacuuming the whole house, or cleaning bathrooms
  • Grocery shopping or running errands outside the home
  • Cooking full family meals or meal prepping for the week
  • Pet care, such as walking dogs or cleaning litter boxes
  • Caring for older siblings on their own
  • Yard work or other heavy household chores

Why the Line Matters

It may seem like it would be easier if your caregiver could do everything. But every minute spent scrubbing a bathroom is a minute not spent with your baby or supporting you. Newborns need close, attentive care, and recovering parents need real rest. Keeping household tasks focused on the baby and the parent protects both.

There’s a safety reason too. Overnight specialists need to be close by and alert to the baby at all times, so they can’t step away for chores in another part of the house.

How to Get the Most From Your Caregiver

  • Talk about your priorities up front. Tell your caregiver which tasks matter most to you, like bottles washed before morning or snacks ready during the day.
  • Set up stations. A clear diaper station, bottle area, and laundry basket make it easy for your caregiver to help efficiently.
  • Leave notes. A short list of preferences, such as where things go or which detergent to use, saves time.
  • Ask questions. Your caregiver is also a teacher. Ask about feeding, sleep, soothing, and anything else on your mind.

Need More Help Around the House?

If you’d love extra household support, consider pairing your newborn care with a cleaning service, a meal delivery service, or a meal train from friends and family. Your caregiver can focus on the baby and you, and the rest of the house still gets taken care of.
